REGIONAL-OPTIMAL
QUALITY is one aspect of SUCCESS, but SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY also represents an important part of CORPORATE CULTURE. One component of this responsibility is the ACTIVELY PRACTISED REGIONALITY, the importance of which the family BERGER has realized for a long time.
Therefore, guidelines were developed in
COOPERATION WITH THE FARMERS OF THE REGION and ANIMAL FEED EXPERTS to turn the ambiguous term into a tangible quality characteristic. Environmental initiatives such as GLOBAL 2000 and the SÜDWIND-AGENTUR were also involved in working out the concept.
SHORT DISTANCES are key in the OVERALL APPROACH, and not only refer to ANIMAL BREEDING but also to the ANIMAL FEED used.

WHY REGIONAL OPTIMAL??

GOOD FOR THE FARMERS OF THE REGION
The pig farms used for REGIONAL-OPTIMAL are based in the Tullnerfeld, up to only approx. 50 km away from the BERGER production site. They are traditional agricultural farms that have been run by the families for generations.
When the project was launched, eight farmers were involved. We are proud to say that today we have already 40 participants.
For example, Veronika and Josef Eichinger, who breed approx. 1000 pigs in accordance with the stringent REGIONAL-OPTIMAL requirements on their farm in Würmla, have been involved from the start. “It had been a major change indeed,” Josef Eichinger remembers. “People ridiculed us as some kind of exotic breed,” Veronika Eichinger adds. Today, this has changed fundamentally, and even consumers have become aware of the benefits of regionality.

As a PARTNER FARM of family Berger, we have supported the meat initiative REGIONAL-OPTIMAL with our pig breeding farm from the very beginning. This means that all piglets on our farm are BORN IN AUSTRIA and exclusively feed on REGIONAL FODDER originating from AUSTRIA and the DANUBE REGION.

The short transport distance to Berger and their brand meat program REGIONAL-OPTIMAL are in line with our idea of quality and sustainability.

The REGIONAL-OPTIMAL program of Family Berger supports our commitment to the Tullnerfeld region – the piglets are bred by a pig farmer in our town , the slaughterhouse for our fattening pigs is located only approx. 8 km away.

GOOD FOR THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WORLD
Conventional pig feed uses soy from Latin America. In the process, large areas in Brazil and Argentina are exploited, peasant farmers are evicted from their land, primeval forests are cleared. Through “close proximity of the feedstuff”, REGIONAL-OPTIMAL strives to make a contribution to improving this situation, among other things.

GOOD FOR
OUR CLIMATE

The animals bred for REGIONAL-OPTIMAL feed on protein feedstuff, such as canola, peas, regional soy or potato protein – originating from within a radius of only 500 km. As a result, REGIONAL-OPTIMAL pork has a reduced carbon footprint. “As close as possible” is also valid for the animal feed!

A more than 1,000 m² solar heating system has been implemented that generates the energy necessary for cooking and pasteurization of the meat products. This helps us save 62,500 litres of fuel oil per year – equivalent to the energy consumption of 15 single-family houses. In addition, we have erected a 1,700 m² photovoltaic plant.

Good without
genetic engineering

In Austria, production of food without genetically engineered organisms must fulfil special legal regulations. On the one hand, these concern the use of specific raw materials, on the other hand, the labelling of the products.
In pig farming, coarse soybean meal from South America (large cultivation areas in Brazil and Argentina) is normally used as high-protein feed in Austria and in entire Europe. In most cases, this is genetically engineered. For REGIONAL-OPTIMAL, on the other hand, we generally only use animal feed grown in the Tullnerfeld and the Danube region.
In accordance with strict legal regulations in force in Austria, REGIONAL-OPTIMAL is therefore deemed “GMO free”.

This estimate considers the LULUC (land-use and land-use change in Latin America) factor because REGIONAL-OPTIMAL pigs are fed on regional protein feed. The calculation is based on a study conducted by SERI in 2011.
